The honest answer, checked 9 August 2026

Can I get free air conditioning?

Not through a general UK grant for cooling-only AC. The useful distinction is between an air conditioner and an air-to-air heat pump that heats as well as cools. Some eligible heating or whole-home projects can receive public support, but the amount and measures depend on the scheme.

Three questions decide the route

  1. 1

Will the system heat your home?

A cooling-only split is not an eligible BUS heat pump. An air-to-air system designed to provide heating may be, if it meets all other scheme rules.

  2. 2

Which UK country is the property in?

BUS covers England and Wales. Warm Homes: Local Grant is England only. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have separate household energy schemes.

  3. 3

Does the home and household qualify?

Whole-home programmes usually consider income or benefits, EPC rating, tenure and technical suitability. Qualification can lead to an assessed package, not a cash amount you choose yourself.

£2,500 for eligible air-to-air heat pumps

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme rate for an eligible residential air-to-air system is £2,500 from 21 July 2026. The installer applies and passes the voucher value on as an upfront discount. Air-to-water and ground-source rates differ.

An assessed whole-home package

Warm Homes: Local Grant can support approved measures such as insulation, solar PV, controls and low-carbon heating. Your council or delivery body decides what the property needs and what the programme can fund.

Questions, answered

Is there a UK grant for a cooling-only air conditioner?

No general national scheme listed here funds a standalone cooling-only air conditioner. Some whole-home programmes may specify measures after assessment, but you should not assume that ordinary AC will be included.

Does an air-to-air heat pump qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

It can. From 21 July 2026, an eligible residential air-to-air heat pump can receive £2,500 in England and Wales. It must provide heating, replace an eligible existing heating system, use eligible MCS-certified installation and meet the full scheme rules. Cooling-only AC does not qualify.

Can Warm Homes: Local Grant pay for solar?

An approved package can include solar PV, insulation, smart controls and low-carbon heating for eligible homes in England. The delivery body surveys the property and chooses suitable measures, so solar is possible but not guaranteed.

Should I start work before a grant decision?

No. Follow the official route and wait for the required approval. Starting work too early can make a project ineligible.
