Choose cooling-only on purpose
A split AC quote should still show room heat loads, outdoor noise, efficiency, pipe and condensate routes, electrical work and controls. Adding a heating mode does not automatically make it a good winter design.

AC or an air-to-air heat pump?
Many wall systems can reverse to heat as well as cool. The meaningful question is whether yours should be designed and commissioned as part of the home's heating system, or bought principally for summer cooling.

Best route to investigate
Air-to-air heat pump
You want both heating and cooling, so one reversible system can serve both needs. Compare its whole-year heating design with a cooling-only split before choosing.
Funding context
An eligible air-to-air heat pump may receive £2,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme if it replaces eligible heating and meets the full scheme rules. Cooling-only AC does not qualify.
Compare whole-year heating cost and comfort, not just the summer cooling price.
Design heat pumps for winter
If heating matters, ask for the winter design temperature, room-by-room heat requirement, seasonal efficiency and expected use of backup heating. Compare that with your current fuel cost.
Check permission before buying
Fixed equipment can trigger property-owner consent, planning conditions and building-regulation duties. Listed buildings, conservation areas, flats and visible outdoor units need particular care.
